It’s located on  the recently revamped Thalang Road which is smack bang in the heart of the historic Portuguese are of the town. For a day out you cannot do better than browsing around here and exploring on your own time.

Basically the Walking Street is a 375m long eclectic mix of Chinese, Indian and Thai shops and restaurants where you can spend hours of idly walking around, taking in al the sights, sounds and smells that make up the fabric of Walking Street. As the name suggests this is what you do and take your time doing it as you don’t want to miss out on anything. Here you can visit locals selling wares from fabrics, souvenirs, jewellery and crafts plus sample some great local Thai cuisine. This is a once in a week event every Sunday from 4pm to 10pm and it’s very tourist and family friendly, so bring the kids and enjoy! As an added bonus this is totally free and there is a trampoline so the kids can be entertained while you do your own thing.

The best way to get to Phukets Walking Street is on the east side  of Thalang Road. Here you will see a massive Chinese gate. All you have to do is walk straight through it. This is the perfect place for a group selfie right under the words Lardyai which means Walking St in Thai. The whole place exudes an old world charm where you really get a feel of how Phuket was before the hordes of tourists arrived. It’s mix of Chinese and Indian gives you an insight into Phuket’s history and what it was like pre 1900’s. The old buildings ‘chop houses’ have been restored and it’s colours and architecture simply add to the vibrancy of the place. Like so many of these types of historic places all over S.E Asia Walking Street never disappoints.  It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and hang around till the evening.

If you are into eating and grabbing a local souvenir while soaking up some serious S.E Asia vibe then Walking Street is the go. Why not hit the first local stall you see selling BBQ squid or sate chicken, and make your way through the throngs of like minded tourists doing exactly the same thing. As things heat up grab a fresh fruit juice or ice cream from any of the hundreds of vendors scattered around. There is no shortage of food or bargains here. Like everything in Phuket some items seem the same and why make the effort of coming here if you can get the same souvenirs and T shirts near your hotel/villa? Well, the answer is simple; it’s the atmosphere. Come here and enjoy the way of life from yesteryear.
