What’s the standard of healthcare like in Koh Samui?

  • Hospitals:

Basically, hospitals are great in Ko Samui. There are well trained doctors and nurses that speak English so if you get sick or there is an emergency you should be OK. Having said that, it is advisable to have medical insurance and ensure that you are on the first plane back home if it is serious and you can fly.

  • Pharmacies:

There are pharmacies all over Koh Samui and this will be your first stop if you have to go to a doctor or hospital and they prescribe medicine. They are all generally open till late and there are pharmacies that are open 24/7. Communication is easy as most Thai people working in a pharmacy have a great command of the English language.

  • Bangkok Hospital Samui

This is the biggest and the best hospital on the island – there are very well trained doctors who can attend to most emergencies.

If you are staying near the Bophut area then this hospital is very convenient. They have again great doctors and they can perform surgeries here as well as attend to trauma victims – think motor bike accidents!

  • Samui International Hospital

This is a new hospital and many of Samui’s tourists come here for cosmetic procedures. Still a great hospital with top service and staff on hand to assist you in case of any medical issues.

  • Thai International Hospital

The Thai International Hospital is a 24/7 emergency hospital that also has a great cosmetic surgery department.

  • Samui Government Hospital

As a last resort try the Samui Government Hospital – it’s a government hospital and geared towards locals so do not expect the same level of service or care that the others provide. Plus the staff’s English is limited.
